I had the pleasure of camping in the high desert Tuesday night as the rest of the world watched, one jaw-dropping state at a time, as Trump was elected president. In the morning I drove into town and turned on the radio to be shocked by the news, all at once. I began to race through the rhetoric of Trump's campaign, the policies he vowed to extinguish and the power he’ll have with a congress behind him: supreme court, trade policies, immigration, national security, social policy, healthcare—holy crap, he’s going to repeal Obamacare. As with much of his campaign promises, he vowed to remove legislation without a plan as to what would replace it. So what will Trumpcare look like?

Selling to a Health System is like Breaking your Arm

"Selling to a health system is like breaking your arm." I’m speaking with J. Simpson over a Chick-fil-A in the sticky mist of the three-story fountain at MD Anderson in Houston. Many things purchased for UT System’s health campuses come across her desk at the UT System Supply Chain Alliance.

Patient engagement.
Some would say it’s a myth. Attempts to increase patient involvement in managing their health have been hurled from every angle, but it seems that until they are faced with a life-threatening illness, chronic diseases, or a broken bone, patients just can't be bothered to truly and proactively care about their health.

The other day, I had the opportunity to interview Mark Scheppe, a developer at CODE responsible for integrating their application at customer sites running EHRs like GE Centricity and NextGen. In our talk, he explains the challenges associated with integration, as well as provides some insights for developers at the beginning of the journey.

For digital health application developers, creating an amazing health solution is just the beginning of getting into patients and providers hands. Between creation and delivery, there’s plenty of decisions to be made regarding how to develop, market, and sell your product.
My Water Broke, And You Should See This Sunrise
Posted by Niko Skievaski on Jul 13, 2016 9:51:58 AM
Nettie woke me up at 5am on Saturday, "My water broke, and you should see this sunrise!" She was a silhouette of orange and pink sky standing above a towel. We were six days past the due date and expecting labor to start. I struggled out of bed and prepped the hospital bag, made breakfast, tried not to freak out. It wasn't until noon when contractions started. Over the next few hours, they grew in intensity and progressed to around five minutes apart. They say not to go to the hospital until you hit around three minutes. I called our doula who came right over to begin her work. By nightfall, contractions had intensified but the frequency was still around five minutes. We decided to go to the hospital anyway.
Why we Meditate in Team Meetings

On Wednesdays we come together as a full team for our weekly meeting. We're geographically distributed, so the majority of us appear as a tiny box on a TV at the end of the conference room table. After the normal banter and AV woes are ironed out, the first thing on the agenda is silence—we sit and meditate together. This lasts about three minutes and is followed by a lap around the group to share your personal wellness intention for the coming week and assess how last week's intention went.

Salesforce: Case Management with a CRM?

Today we announced a partnership with Salesforce’s as they launch their Health Cloud product at HIMSS this week. In our early discussions, the first thing I wanted to understand was what the world leading CRM tool was doing in healthcare? After a demo and some discussion, I started to draw the similarities in activities between the jobs of a sales person and a case manager:
Beyond Meaningful Use: Will EHR vendors be able to meet providers’ evolving needs?

After a long couple of weeks on the road, I sat down in my window seat and closed my eyes for a quick flight back to Madison. It was then that the familiar urge from my pocket beckoned me to check my notifications.
When does a Startup grow up?
Posted by Niko Skievaski on Jan 22, 2016 11:00:00 PM
In 2013 I left big business and started my first company. I abruptly discovered that all the stuff I learned in business school was not applicable. You can’t market a product that doesn’t yet exist. You can’t manage employees when you don’t have any. You can’t create analyses and forecasts when there’s absolutely nothing predictable. I learned that another set of skills was required for startups, skills more appropriate for the tasks of proposing and testing hypotheses than for efficiently managing an enterprise. I found that a startup is not a business at all; it’s an entity searching for a scalable business model.
